If you’re unsure whether osteopathy is right for you, our team will assess your symptoms and guide you through the best treatment options.

What Happens At Your First Appointment?

Your Diagnosis: Finding the Root Cause of Your Pain

We don’t just treat symptoms—we identify why your pain started.

Your first appointment includes:

  • A full medical case history
  • Questions about how and when your pain began
  • A hands‑on physical examination
  • Assessment of posture, joint movement and muscle tension
  • Medical tests, if needed (e.g., blood pressure, reflexes)

Understanding the underlying cause allows us to treat the problem effectively and stop it from recurring. For example:

  • Knee pain may come from weakness in the feet, hips or pelvis
  • Shoulder or arm pain may be caused by a trapped nerve in the neck

This whole‑body approach is what makes osteopathy so effective.

What Techniques Does An Osteopath Use?

Your osteopath will use a combination of techniques tailored to your needs, such as:

  • Deep tissue massage to release tight, painful muscles
  • Joint mobilisation & stretching to improve movement
  • Manipulation (quick, precise movements that may produce a click) to free restricted joints
  • Shockwave Therapy for inflamed ligaments, tendonitis and soft‑tissue injuries
  • G5 massage machine for soft‑tissue recovery
  • Custom orthotics for your shoes to support foot, knee, hip and back alignment

Every treatment plan is designed to reduce pain, restore movement, and prevent the problem from returning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can osteopathy help with back pain?

Yes, back pain is one of the most common conditions that our osteopaths treat -both upper and lower back. We treat all types of back pain, including those caused by disc problems, joint problems, muscle and ligament strain, and sciatica. It is very successful, particularly when treatments like painkillers and rest have not worked.

Can osteopathy help with headaches and migraines?

Our osteopaths have great success in treating various types of headaches, including tension headaches, migraines, sinus pain and spinal headaches. We treat the muscles in the neck and the base of the skull, relieving tension and stress.

What is the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor/physiotherapist?

Osteopaths are musculoskeletal specialists who believe that you need to treat the muscles as well as the joints and bones, and they take a holistic approach to your treatment. Whereas chiropractors concentrate on the spine, your bones and the nervous system, and physiotherapists generally prescribe exercises for stretching and strengthening muscles. Osteopaths and chiropractors are trained to diagnose conditions, whereas physiotherapists usually need a diagnosis and referral from a doctor. Both osteopaths and chiropractors train for four years, whereas physiotherapy is only three years.

Does osteopathy hurt?

Osteopathic treatment is rarely painful, although sometimes there can be slight discomfort at the time. We always work within the patient’s tolerance communicating with the patient throughout the whole session, so we can adapt or adjust any treatment we are providing.

Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?

Yes, osteopathy is a very popular treatment during pregnancy as it is non-intrusive and does not include medication. Treatments are adapted to each expectant mother and the stage of their pregnancy. Common problems are lower back pain, pelvic pain, and plantar fasciitis. Many patients continue treatment post-natal as their body starts to return to normal.

Is osteopathy suitable for children?

Yes, osteopathy is suitable for children. As their bodies are still growing, they respond quickly to treatment, and commonly need only 1 or 2 treatments. We do offer courses of shockwave therapy for children suffering from Osgood-Schlatter’s disease (pain in the front of the shin, usually following activities such as football). We do not treat children under 8, as our osteopaths have not taken advanced courses in paediatric care.

Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?

No, you do not need a referral as osteopaths are legally bound to take a medical case history and reach a diagnosis of their own before any treatment can start. If you have had any tests or scans, please bring them along to your appointment or email them beforehand.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions will depend on your diagnosis and the history of your condition. For most conditions, a treatment course is usually between 1 and 6 sessions. Long-term conditions may require regular quarterly maintenance sessions.

How much does osteopathy cost?

A new patient assessment and diagnosis is £35. Treatments range between £60-£70 depending on whether you purchase a course of treatment or pay-as-you-go. Shockwave treatments are more expensive. Please see our Prices page for all full break-down of our prices.

What should I wear to my appointment?

During your osteopathy treatment, we may need to assess and work on various muscles and joints, so it helps to wear comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing. We provide gowns to maintain your modesty and will only ask you to remove relevant items of clothing — always with your consent before treating any area. We recommend wearing appropriate underwear, and if you’re coming in for back treatment, females may find it helpful to wear a bra with a back clasp rather than a sports bra, to allow easier access to the area.
