Shockwave Therapy at Avenue Health
Shockwave Therapy Worcester Park & Cheam – Fast, Non-Invasive Treatment for Stubborn Tendon, Muscle and Joint Pain
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a highly effective, non‑surgical treatment that uses high‑energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in damaged tissues. It’s particularly effective for chronic tendon and muscle conditions that haven’t improved with rest, exercise, or other conservative treatments.
At Avenue Health, we use the Swiss DolorClast® system — the gold standard in shockwave technology — to deliver safe, targeted and clinically proven results.
We have both Focused Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (fESWT) and Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT). The difference between the two types of Shockwave is that the ESWT/Radial Shockwave produces pressure waves that travel through the tissue from the applicator radially and are absorbed quickly. Whereas the fESWT is more accurate and focuses the pressure waves to a specific depth in the injured tissue, depending on the applicator used.

Shockwave Therapy is ideal for chronic or persistent musculoskeletal conditions, including:
- Plantar fasciitis & heel pain
- Achilles tendinopathy

- Shoulder tendinopathy (including chronic pain & calcific tendonitis)
- Patellar tendinopathy (runners/jumpers knee)
- Hip pain & gluteal tendinopathy
- Shin splints
- Muscle strains, spasms & chronic tightness
- Trigger points & myofascial pain

How Shockwave Therapy Works
These effects help restore mobility, reduce pain and support long‑term healing. Studies have shown it can reduce the time for a bone fracture to heal from 6 weeks to 4 weeks.
I sustained a rotational cuff injury 3 months prior to starting my shockwave therapy. This injury was impacting my life and mental health immensely, after 6 shockwave treatments I now have full movement and am pain free.
Michael was always friendly and professional and listened to my issues and explained everything so well before and during the sessions. The treatment was uncomfortable but Michael made sure it was bearable at all times, adjusting the strength to suit me.
Highly recommend him and the therapy!!!!

What to Expect During Treatment
A shockwave-only session lasts 10–15 minutes and includes:
- Assessment of the painful area
- Application of gel to improve shockwave transmission
- Delivery of shockwaves using a handheld device
- Advice on aftercare and activity modification
Most patients experience:
- Reduced pain within a few sessions, and in some cases, straight away
- Improved mobility
- Long‑term healing as tissues regenerate
Shockwave Therapy is non‑invasive, requires no injections, and has minimal downtime.
At Avenue Health, we also offer a combination of shockwave and osteopathy treatments as part of a 30-minute appointment.

20 years ago, Shockwave therapy was used by the medical profession for the treatment of kidney stones. Many studies since have found it to be effective in other conditions where conventional treatment has been found unsuccessful.
My tennis elbow was very painful. Avenue Health gave initial diagnosis and suggested that Shockwave treatment can given.
I had a course of six treatments. At each appointment, Michael assessed and identified specific area points for shockwave intensity and duration and accordingly applied treatments. By the end of six treatments my pain level reduced rapidly and achieved 90+% relief.
I provided this feedback a week after my last appointment to say that I am now 95+% better. I can resume my normal activities.
I recommend Avenue Health and Shockwave treatment unreservedly. Thank you Michael for providing this very effective & efficient treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How soon will I see results from shockwave therapy?
For most patients, results from their shockwave treatment are an immediate reduction in symptoms. In some cases, no change in pain is noticed for one or two sessions as the body requires more time to start healing itself. Plantar fasciitis patients often report being able to walk normally after the first appointment.
Who is not suitable for shockwave therapy?
Children that are still growing cannot be treated over the growth plates of their bones, with the exception of Osgood-Schlatter’s disease. Our osteopaths will treat people who bruise easily or are on blood thinners, more cautiously to minimise bruising. There is extra caution when treating pregnant women, although treatment to the feet is very safe.
How many sessions of shockwave therapy will I need?
Depending on how long you have had the condition, it might be between 4 and 6 shockwave treatments. Some people will require ‘top-ups’ a few months down the line. For arthritic conditions, shockwave is used as a maintenance treatment and is usually performed once every 4-6 weeks, to relieve pain.
Does shockwave therapy hurt?
Shockwave Therapy can cause discomfort at the time of use, but we can adjust the power to work within your pain threshold. As your condition improves during your course, you will be able to tolerate a higher power of shockwaves each session. Most people leave having had immediate reduction in their pain level. There are no long-term side effects with shockwave therapy.
Are there any side effects after shockwave therapy?
There not normally side effects after treatment, but occasionally there can be soreness, redness and slight bruising. This is nothing to worry about and will only last a few days.
Can I exercise after shockwave therapy?
It is advisable to wait at least 2 hours, but preferably 24 hours, after treatment, before participating in vigorous exercise that uses the area affected. For example, if we have treated your Achilles tendon, running should be avoided for 24 hours, but an upper body workout in the gym or Pilates, will be fine.
Is shockwave therapy available on the NHS?
On rare occasions it is available, but treatments are often limited to 3 sessions and they do not have the state-of-the-art EMS Focused and Radial Shockwave Therapy machines, that we have at Avenue Health. Despite the higher cost of the treatment, you will find our prices are very competitive.
How much does shockwave therapy cost?
A new patient assessment and diagnosis is £35. If shockwave therapy is recommended, treatments range between £70 & £90 depending on whether you purchase a course of treatment or pay-as-you-go. Please see our Prices page for all full break-down of our prices.
Can shockwave therapy be combined with osteopathy?
We combine osteopathy treatment and shockwave therapy at Avenue Heath, as we treat the symptoms and the underlying cause at each appointment. This results in a long-term solution to our patients.

I received 6 sessions of Shockwave Treatment for a foot injury I sustained at the gym. The treatment has hugely helped with my recovery and I felt supported and listened to the whole time by Michael.
